Robert Brown

“Rillito’s a good town, but it’s a forgotten town.”

44-year-old Robert Brown is Brown-Hurd’s nephew. He knows the history of the town extremely well, and explains that it became populated before desegregation in the 1950s. Brown explained that blacks weren’t allowed to buy property in the neighboring town of Marana, so they settled in Rillito near the cotton fields many of the inhabitants worked. He has a lot of pride in his community he grew up in and the people he grew up with, telling the tale of how far the residents of Rillito have come and all the plans they have for the future. He said he wants the county and state to help Rillito residents to help themselves, not just improve everything for them. Brown is currently constructing a miniature golf course across the street from the park. He said he wanted to build a place where the children of Rillito can meet and play after the town’s recreational center was torn down two years ago.

“A community is a family, and it takes maybe all of us together to raise one another and check on each other’s well beings. It’s just the way it goes.”
